What to Expect at Your First Concussion Assessment
Walking in without knowing what's about to happen is its own kind of stress. Here's how your first visit works:
- History and symptom review. We talk through how the injury happened, what you're feeling now, and any baseline test results already on file.
- Hands-on and technology-assisted testing. Depending on your symptoms, this may include oculomotor (eye-tracking) testing with Neuroflex (virtual reality), balance assessment on our force plates, assessment on Brain Tool Kit, and a review of cognitive function.
- A plain-language explanation of what's affected. You'll leave knowing which systems (balance, vision, cognition, etc.) took the hit, not just that you "have a concussion."
- A personalized recovery plan with a realistic timeline. This includes what to do in the next 48 hours, when to follow up, and, if applicable, a return-to-learn or return-to-play roadmap.
Our initial assessments happen over 2 appointments, lasting 60 minutes each. If you already have a baseline test on file from before your injury, bring that information with you, it speeds up diagnosis significantly.

Why Baseline Testing is Essential
Baseline Testing In Brampton for Teams and Individuals
At EPIC Health and Movement, we offer comprehensive baseline concussion testing for individuals and sports teams (up to 10 players at a time). Whether you play hockey, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, baseball, are an alpine skier or any other sport, having a baseline test before your season begins is crucial. Baseline concussion testing allows us to understand how your brain functions in a healthy state, so if a concussion occurs during your season, we can pinpoint exactly which areas of your brain have been affected.
With this detailed information, we can accelerate your Concussion Therapy including Return to Learn and Return to Play process through targeted treatments such as:
-
Neuroflex Virtual Reality Training
-
Oculomotor Training
- Balance and cordination training on force plates
This ensures a safe and efficient recovery, tailored to your needs. Our team is highly trained in concussion care to ensure you get back to your game or daily life as quickly and safely as possible.
Complex Concussion Consultations
In-depth, 3 hour long appointments for patients outside of the Brampton area.
This consultation is intended for individuals experiencing persistent post-concussion symptoms who feel they have not fully recovered despite previous treatment or rehabilitation. Many patients seeking this service have been symptomatic for months or years and are looking for a more comprehensive assessment and clearer direction for recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
As soon as possible. Early assessment lets us establish a clear symptom baseline and start the right treatment sooner. This is one of the biggest factors in a faster, safer recovery.
Baseline testing happens before an injury, while you're healthy, so we know what "normal" looks like for your brain. A concussion assessment happens after an injury to compare against that baseline (or, if you don't have one, against standard benchmarks) and identify exactly what's been affected.
Yes. Our team treats concussions across all ages, from youth athletes to working adults, with treatment plans adjusted for return-to-learn as well as return-to-play needs.
It varies by person and injury, which is why we don't use a one-size-fits-all timeline. Targeted treatments like Neuroflex Virtual Reality Training, oculomotor training, and force-plate balance work are designed to accelerate recovery safely rather than just "wait it out."
