Fall Prevention in Brampton

Ice on the driveway, a loose rug, a stair that feels steeper than it used to. Many people start thinking about their balance long before a fall happens.

November is Fall Prevention Month in Canada. EPIC Health and Movement offers fall prevention in Brampton through chiropractic care, acupuncture, kinesiology and physiotherapy. We also lead the GLA:D program for knee and hip osteoarthritis. We start by looking at how you move, then plan care around what you want to keep doing.

What Fall Prevention Care Involves

Fall prevention means finding what makes you unsteady and working on it before a fall happens. No single treatment does this. Public health researchers describe a mix of approaches. Balance and strength exercise and a review of medication side effects are two strategies that may lower fall risk.

At EPIC, we look at your joints and spine and how you walk. We also check leg strength and how steady you are when you turn or step up. Your plan may include hands-on care for stiff or painful areas and exercises you can repeat at home. We do not change medications. Your doctor or pharmacist reviews those.

Who Can Benefit From Fall Prevention?

Fall prevention is not only for people who have already fallen. Parachute, a Canadian injury prevention charity, reports that 20 to 30 per cent of older adults fall each year. Care may suit:

  • Adults over 65 who want to stay independent
  • People who feel less steady after an injury, surgery or illness
  • Anyone whose knee, hip or back pain changes how they walk
  • People who avoid stairs, ice or crowds because they worry about falling
  • Family members helping a parent decide where to start

Younger adults with balance concerns are welcome too. If you have had a fall with a head injury, severe pain or sudden weakness, see a doctor or go to the emergency room first.

Signs You May Need Help With Balance

You may notice one or more of these:

  • Holding the stair rail more than you used to
  • Hesitating on curbs, icy steps or uneven ground
  • Using your hands to push up from a chair
  • Near misses, such as catching yourself on a counter
  • Knee, hip or back pain that makes you shorten your steps
  • Cutting back on walks or outings because you worry about falling

Public health sources list reduced mobility, muscle weakness, vision changes and medication side effects among the factors linked to falls. Some of these need a doctor, an eye exam or a pharmacist. Stiff joints and weak legs are things our team can assess.

How Care May Lower Your Fall Risk

Chiropractic care may ease stiff or painful joints in the spine, hips and knees. That can make steps and turns feel easier. Our chiropractors adapt their techniques to your age, comfort and bone health.

Acupuncture may help with pain and stiffness. Dr. Saakshi Khosla, DC, RAc, and Dr. Danielle Wiesner, DC, RAc, offer it alongside chiropractic care.

Kinesiology and physiotherapy add the exercise side: leg strength, balance practice and movement patterns you can repeat at home. No treatment can promise you will never fall.

Our Approach to Fall Prevention

Falls rarely have one cause, so we do not treat them as one problem. Our chiropractors, kinesiologist and physiotherapist work under one roof and can coordinate your care.

Dr. Saakshi Khosla, DC, RAc, works mainly with older adults and takes part in community fall prevention outreach. She speaks Punjabi, and the GLA:D program at EPIC runs in English and Punjabi.

GLA:D Program for Knee and Hip Pain

GLA:D Canada, sometimes written GLAD, stands for Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark. It pairs education about osteoarthritis with supervised group exercise. Dr. Saakshi Khosla, DC, RAc, is GLA:D certified and leads the program at EPIC.

Participants complete a one-on-one assessment, two education sessions and twelve supervised exercise sessions, then a re-assessment. If knee or hip pain makes stairs or uneven ground feel risky, this may be a good place to start. GLA:D is designed for knee and hip osteoarthritis, so it is not a fall prevention program on its own. See the GLA:D program page for details and registration.
