Expert Spine Biomechanics

The Expert Spine Biomechanics division is dedicated to analyzing and improving spinal function and mechanics using advanced diagnostics and therapeutic techniques. Our specialists assess posture, movement patterns, and spine function and loading behaviour. This is combined to understand injury mechanisms and pain triggers which create a biological tipping point exceeding tissue and/or pain tolerance. The process of these specialised consultations is to root out the mechanical cause of the specific triggers and restore balance in the biological tipping point to facilitate healthy adaptations and promote the healing cycle.

Once a precise diagnosis is reached formulation of the collaborative plan is created while informing and educating the patient to enhance their understanding and ability to manage tissue stress and therapeutic decision making. Treatment plans are designed to enhance spinal health, reduce pain, prevent future injuries, and even enhance physical performance and athleticism.

Expert Spine Biomechanics sessions are typically 3 hours in duration and range from 2.5 to 4 hours depending on the case and patient presentation. Neck, mid-back and lower back pain are assessed during these intensive consultation assessments. Patients will be asked to provide detailed historical reports, imaging studies and be prepared for an intensive half day of history taking, diagnostic testing, and biomechanical interventions to address their mechanical spine disorders.

Dr. Edward Cambridge

McGill Method Master Clinician & Head Instructor

Dr. Edward Cambridge is a McGill Method Master Clinician and serves as the head instructor alongside Dr. Stuart McGill.

He trained directly under Dr. McGill for over six years while completing his PhD, working side-by-side in both research and clinical settings.

His doctoral research focused on:

Hip & Spine Mechanics – understanding the linkage from injury mechanisms to rehabilitation.

This work forms a critical foundation of the modern McGill Method approach.

The McGill Method

The McGill Method is a world-renowned, evidence-based approach to assessing and treating spine pain, developed by Dr. Stuart McGill after more than 30 years of research into the mechanisms of low back pain.

At its core, the McGill Method is built on one fundamental principle:

All back pain has a cause—and identifying that cause is the key to recovery.

Rather than applying generalized treatments, the McGill Method uses a highly individualized assessment process to identify each patient’s unique pain triggers, movement patterns, and injury mechanisms. Once identified, treatment is precisely tailored to eliminate pain triggers, restore movement, and build resilience.

What Makes the McGill Method Different

  • Mechanism-based diagnosis (not symptom-based care)
  • Detailed, one-on-one assessment process
  • Pattern recognition and differential diagnosis to identify the true pain generator
  • Personalized movement strategies to eliminate pain triggers
  • Progressive rehabilitation focused on long-term resilience—not temporary relief

This approach is particularly effective for individuals who have not responded to traditional care.

The Assessment: A “Living Diagnosis”

A hallmark of the McGill Method is what is often referred to as a “living assessment.”

This process includes:

  • A detailed history of pain triggers and patterns
  • Movement testing to identify intolerances
  • Systematic modification of positions and loads
  • Ongoing refinement of diagnosis as new information emerges

Rather than labeling pain as “non-specific,” the McGill Method works to sub-classify the pain pathway, allowing for targeted and effective intervention.

The Goal: Pain-Free Movement and Performance

The ultimate goal is not simply to reduce pain—but to restore pain-free function and performance.

Patients are guided through:

  • Eliminating pain triggers in daily life
  • Building spinal stability and control
  • Reintroducing movement safely and progressively
  • Developing long-term strategies for durability and performance

This creates lasting results—not dependency on passive care.

Spine Biomechanics

The biomechanical assessment, know as the McGill Method, is a unique clinical practice that caters to problematic cases of low back pain and neck pain. This entails an in depth assessment including a full health and pain history as well as a focus physical examination. The patient will receive an understanding of their current situation and their path towards healing. Specialized care is provided to those who have experienced failed management with typical approaches to treatment.
